The vocabulary of learning platforms, made simple

Short definitions so that everyone speaks the same language before choosing a solution.

LMS (Learning Management System)

A software platform for publishing training, enrolling learners and tracking their progress.

White label

A deployment mode in which the platform vendor stays invisible: the interface displays the client organisation's identity.

SaaS (Software as a Service)

Learning path

An ordered sequence of modules and activities that leads a learner towards a training objective.

Module

A unit of content within a learning path, grouping resources and activities around a single concept.

Active learner

A learner who has logged in or completed an activity on the platform during a given period. Often used as the basis for sizing a licence.

Completion rate

The share of learners who have completed a learning path or module, relative to the number enrolled.

Cohort

A group of learners following the same learning path over the same period.

Blended learning

An approach that combines face-to-face or virtual classroom sessions with independent online learning.
